“Digital sweatshop” is a term coined by Dominic Ligot, a Filipino AI ethicist. AI companies are outsourcing their work with people training data in developing countries with low wages. According to an article in The Washington Post, Philippines, India and Venezuela are taking jobs to train AI data (Behind the AI boom, an army of overseas workers in ‘digital sweatshops’, The Washington Post, 28th August 2023). I believe the term is a key concept related to the challenges faced in AI ethics.

Maribel Tercedor is a full professor at the Department of Translation and Interpreting of the University of Granada, where she teaches multimedia and scientific and technical translation. She has been involved as a PI in researching translation and the language of medicine in different funded research projects (VariMed-FFi2011-23120, CombiMed-FFI-51899R, EIMITA-C- HUM-145-UGR23) and a project on the expression of emotions (LEXEMOS-A-HUM-131-UGR18). Her main research interests are in the fields of lexical and cognitive aspects of scientific and technical translation, terminology (variation and phraseology) and accessibility in translation. She participated in the making of the English-Spanish Oxford Dictionary and the Richmond series of dictionaries where she worked in neology selection, contextual information and entry structure.
