With the support of a Young Researcher Conference Grant, Elisa Squadrito attended the 15th International Conference on Historical Lexicography and Lexicology (ICHLL15), held on 24–27 June 2025. Her presentation, entitled Linguistic Creativity in the Age of Content Moderation and Filter Word Lists, was delivered together with her colleague and co-leader Anas Fahad Khan, and showcased research conducted within Task 2.6 of the Action on algospeak as both a coded language and a form of creative lexical play.
“The conference was a wonderful opportunity to situate algospeak within a historical and diachronic perspective,” Squadrito noted. “We explored its connections to related forms of coded language and its relevance within broader lexicographic and terminological research.”
The presentation focused on previous research on algospeak, its links to other forms of coded language, and the initial steps taken within the Action to document it. The talk generated strong interest among the diverse group of researchers attending the conference, particularly in relation to algospeak as a process of lexical creativity and its variation across languages and cultures.
“Attending ICHLL15 gave me visibility not only for my research on algospeak but also as a young researcher working in lexicology, terminology, and lexical innovation” she reflected. “It was an invaluable opportunity to receive feedback and connect with linguists from various universities and countries. I hope these exchanges will lead to future collaborations.”
