STSM: Tourism Neology in the Francophone World: Lexical Innovation and Terminological Planning
Name: GIOVANNI LUCA TALLARICO
Start : 15/06/2026
End: 26/06/2026
From 15 to 26 June 2026, Giovanni Luca Tallarico carried out a Short-Term Scientific Mission at Université Laval in Québec City, Canada, hosted by Prof. Bruno Courbon. The STSM focused on tourism neology in the Francophone world, with particular attention to lexical innovation, specialised discourse, and terminological planning.
During the mission, bibliographical research was conducted at the Université Laval Library and at the Gabrielle-Roy Library in Québec City. This work made it possible to consult specialised publications on French neology, terminology, lexical innovation, and the history of neology in Québec.

A central part of the STSM consisted of exchanges with specialists in lexicology and terminology. Meetings with members of the Office québécois de la langue française provided valuable insight into institutional approaches to terminological planning, the management of tourism terminology, and the relationship between prescribed terminology and actual language use. These discussions contributed to refining the methodological framework of the research.
The STSM also included scholarly dissemination activities at Université Laval. A research seminar entitled Variations néologiques dans le tourisme : discours et pratiques was delivered on 16 June, followed by a workshop for graduate students, Comment étudier la néologie du tourisme ? Repères et méthodes, on 19 June. These activities brought together students, researchers, and members of the Office québécois de la langue française, and helped disseminate ENEOLI’s objectives among Canadian academic audiences.
The mission contributed directly to the development of an ongoing monograph on tourism neology. Meetings with Prof. Bruno Courbon and with Marie-Hélène Boucher, General Manager of the Presses de l’Université Laval, helped clarify the structure of the volume, the publication strategy, and the next steps towards its possible publication.

Beyond its immediate research outcomes, the STSM strengthened links between European and Canadian researchers working on neology, terminology, lexicology, and discourse studies. It also opened perspectives for future collaboration within and beyond the ENEOLI network, including further exchanges with scholars at Université Laval and participation in future international events related to French neology.
