STSM: Comparing and contrasting the neologisms in Turkish and Italian languages in the domain of gastronomy

Start : 29/06/2026
End: 03/07/2026

Halil Balkul’s STSM aimed to investigate the linguistic strategies that Turkish and Italian languages employ to integrate and manage gastronomy-related neologisms by adapting Vinay and Darbelnet’s (1995) translation strategies. The grantee and the host expected to find out whether Turkish and Italian languages were preservative or welcoming in the matter of accepting gastronomy-related neologisms originating from other countries. They paid special attention to the gastronomy-related neologisms in Turkish and Italian borrowings. They did not put extra emphasis on the neologisms originating from other languages.

The findings of the STSM study mainly reveal that while Italian acts as a “curator” of foreign terms—keeping them intact to maintain their exotic or prestigious allure—Turkish acts as an “assimilator,” quickly breaking down foreign terms and rebuilding them to fit the native linguistic skeleton.

Overall, the STSM visit helped the grantee gain new insights into the use of neologisms and collaborate with foreign colleagues. Furthermore, he had the opportunity of disseminating his STSM findings via an international conference and a future book chapter publication. The grantee thanks all ENEOLI Project Team leaders, the host professor (Chiara Preite), and other colleagues in Italy.
