With the support of an ENEOLI Conference Grant, Vitalija Kazlauskienė (Vilnius University, Lithuania) participated in the International ALED-DN 2026 Conference and 10th ALED Mexico Congress, Discursive Panoramas: Voices, Perspectives, Challenges in Societies of Global Crises, held in Puebla, Mexico, on 25–28 August 2026.
Her presentation, “La violence comme indicateur linguistique de transformation sociale à travers la néologie”, explored how lexical innovations can reveal changing ways of naming, conceptualising and evaluating violence in contemporary French media discourse.
The analysis focused on neologisms and emerging lexical uses such as contrôle coercitif, hypertrucage, doxing/doxxing, incel, manosphère, wokisme/wokiste and boomer. It showed two complementary processes: lexical innovation can make emerging or previously less visible forms of violence identifiable, while also providing resources for categorising and evaluating actors, groups and socially contested positions.
The presentation highlighted a broader contribution of neology to the study of social change: new words do not merely name new realities; they also provide linguistic traces of changes in what societies recognise, distinguish and evaluate as violence, threat or social conflict.
Presenting this ENEOLI-related research at ALED-DN also extended the dissemination of the Action beyond Europe. It fostered dialogue with the Latin American discourse-analysis community, opening perspectives for future comparative research on lexical innovation across different linguistic, cultural and social contexts.
