STSM: Analysing word-formation processes in neologisms

Name: Boris Kern

Start : 07/09/2026
End: 18/09/2026

With the support of a Short-Term Scientific Mission grant, Boris Kern (Fran Ramovš Institute of the Slovenian Language ZRC SAZU and University of Nova Gorica) spent two weeks at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies in Seoul, Republic of Korea, working with Prof. Milan Ajdžanović, a specialist in word formation. The mission focused on the terminological aspects of word formation.

The main outcome of the mission is a conceptual framework for a joint article. The article will present the first comparative analysis of Slovenian and Serbian word-formation terminology. It will also address the terminological needs arising from recent formations in both languages, particularly blends, which are emerging largely under the influence of English.

During his stay, Boris Kern also delivered an invited lecture entitled “Slovenian: A Language at the Crossroads of Europe”. The lecture introduced the distinctive features of Slovenian and the digital dictionary resources of the Fran Ramovš Institute, and focused on neologisms shaped by language contact. It brought the work of ENEOLI and Slovenian lexicographic research to an audience beyond Europe. The researchers plan to continue their collaboration on the joint publication within the Action.
