ENEOLI Final Year Meeting in Vitoria-Gasteiz

17.09.2025

On 5–6 September 2025, the ENEOLI community gathered in Vitoria-Gasteiz for its long-awaited Final Year Meeting, hosted by the University of the Basque Country (EHU). The event took place at the Micaela Portilla Research Centre and the Elurreta building, with a local organisation led by David Lindemann. From the very first moments, the atmosphere was marked by collaboration, lively discussion, and excitement about the future of lexical innovation.

On Day 1, the participants had inspiring sessions and group work. The meeting began with a warm welcome from Giovanni Tallarico and Blanca Urgell, who also introduced the theme of Neology in Basque. The morning was dedicated to Working Group sessions:
WG1 (Multilingual Glossary) explored glossary structures and data representation, with contributions from Ana Salgado, David Lindemann, Mike Rosner, Onorina Botezat, and Anna Vacalopoulou.
WG4 (Training in Neology), led by Judit Freixa and Petar Božović, focused on training methodologies and pedagogical innovation.
WG3 (Comparative Neology) held a plenary session led by Vincent Balnat and Kris Heylen, highlighting new subtasks including Neology and Gender Equality and Neologisms in Professional Communication on Food and Drink.
A group photo captured the moment before participants enjoyed lunch and informal networking.

In the afternoon, the spotlight shifted to WG2, with stimulating talks by Fahad Khan & Elisa Squadrito on filter words and algospeak, and Marita Kristiansen on domain-specific neoterms.
Meanwhile, WG4 continued with internal discussions, and WG1 held a hybrid plenary session on glossary planning, drawing insights from Ilán Kernerman, Federica Vezzani, and Mike Rosner. The day concluded with a lively closing session and a social dinner that provided the perfect opportunity to strengthen community ties.

Day 2 was devoted to the Core Group reflections. On Saturday, participants gathered at the Elurreta building for the Core Group meeting, reflecting on the progress made during the second year grant period and planning ahead the main activities for the next year. The session also highlighted the importance of collaboration across disciplines and countries in advancing the study of lexical innovation.

The ENEOLI Final Year Meeting was more than just an academic event: it was a celebration of cooperation, new ideas, and shared passion for lexical innovation. Across two packed days, researchers connected in hybrid sessions, exchanged perspectives, and collaborated on addressing the challenges of lexical innovation. A heartfelt thanks goes to David Lindemann for his excellent organisation, to all presenters and discussants for their contributions, and to the participants, both onsite and online, who made this final meeting truly remarkable. We leave Vitoria-Gasteiz inspired and ready to carry ENEOLI’s work forward!
