With the help of an ITC Conference Grant, Aleksandra Tomaszewska from the Linguistic Engineering Group, Institute of Computer Science, Polish Academy of Sciences, attended the International Congress of Linguists, where she co-chaired a focus stream on corpus linguistics and presented two papers.
The focus stream took place at the Poznan Congress Center in Poznan, Poland. Lively discussions followed the presentations. “This was a remarkable opportunity to explore key challenges in corpus studies as of 2024 and exchange insights with fellow scholars in the field. The conference was an incredible opportunity for collaboration, debate, and learning,” Aleksandra reported.
One major takeaway was the need to collaborate on creating open-access Polish-language corpora, ensuring they are continuous, widely accessible, and modernized to reflect current communication practices. Additionally, ethical and legal concerns were discussed, particularly regarding data licensing, the acquisition of publisher data, and the complexities of using social media data, highlighting the ongoing debate about balancing ethical responsibility with the need for comprehensive data.
Aleksandra presented her two co-authored papers during the conference:
1. “Corpus Studies in 2024: Emerging Trends and Applications,” co-authored with Prof. Maciej Ogrodniczuk, which will soon be published by Brill.
2. “Comparing Gender-Fair Language Strategies in Parliamentary Discourse: Feminization and Neutralization in Spain and Poland,” co-authored with Anna Jamka.
