STSM: A Brief Literature Review on Neologism Extraction and Follow-up Best Practices

Name: Anca Gata

Start : 05/08/2024
End: 06/10/2024
Prepared by Anca Gata

Anca Gata’s STSM at the Johannes Gutenberg University-Mainz was scientifically endorsed by Prof. Dr. Sylvia Thiele at the Romanisches Seminar of the Faculty of Philosophy and Philology. It concentrated on identifying mechanisms, procedures, and tools for neologism retrieval, as reflected in the scientific literature in the field, through a literature review in line with activities taking place within Task 2.3 of ENEOLI Working Group 2.

During the STSM, Anca Gata prepared the communication À propos de l’identification et la veille des néologismes : un bref état de l’art comme contribution au projet de coopération scientifique européenne ENEOLI, accepted for presentation at the colloquium La communication spécialisée: évolutions et mutations III, Ostravská univerzita, November 6-8 2024. Working closely with Prof. Dr. Sylvia Thiele, Anca Gata set up the documentation basis and drafted the summary of an introductory course in Neology for students at the Sending Institution, Dunarea de Jos University of Galati (Languages, Translation, Communication, Journalism, Letters) (Developments in Neology – an Introductory course to Neology Study and Research) with prospects of publication and adoption in the courses, as well as wider distribution across participant institutions in the project.

On advice from Sylvia Thiele, having in mind the necessity to train bachelor and master students, as well as young researchers in the field of neology retrieval and follow-up, and based on the information identified in specialized literature, Anca Gata devised a working concept of a cross-referenced mini glossary in the field, which aims at providing, for training purposes, “labels” or “identifiers” for activities undertaken by digital retrieval tools and subsequent actions taken by linguists. A desirable outcome is to carry on work and develop this microglossary within the Task 2.3 Team.
