STSM: Preparing the ENEOLI Survey launch: Neologism tools and lexicographic information needs

Name: Kris Heylen

Start : 20/08/2024
End: 24/08/2024

Kris Heylen’s STSM at The Institute of the Estonian Language, hosted by Jelena Kallas and Kristina Koppel, centred on refining the ENEOLI online survey, a vital tool for mapping current practices in the analysis of neology. The initial groundwork, completed in spring 2024, involved a draft survey to gather input from six distinct groups: lexicographers, lexicologists, terminologists, translators, computational linguists, and educators. Feedback was collected from a test group, forming the basis for Kris’s efforts to improve the survey’s clarity and ensure its suitability for the target audiences.

During the STSM, Heylen worked closely with the hosts, focusing on two main goals: simplifying the sections of the survey that were deemed overly complex, and ensuring consistency in questions related to comparable content across different survey sections. This process involved meetings with specialists in software for neologism detection and corpus analysis, which provided valuable technical insights. By addressing the feedback from the test phase and refining survey questions, the team ensured that the final version became be more user-friendly and adaptable to diverse respondent needs.

The STSM’s outcomes will be critical in guiding the subsequent phases of the ENEOLI project, particularly tasks 2.2 through 2.5, which explore various aspects of neology analysis. The survey will serve as a critical data source, offering insights that can inform research and contribute to academic publications, thus expanding the visibility of the ENEOLI action.
