Amal Haddad Haddad, Marie Escribe and Tharindu Ranaisghe joined the CIUTI conference in Milan. ENEOLI supported the application with a Young Researcher and Innovator Conference grant.
CIUTI is a prestigious international event dedicated to translation and interpreting studies. The conference theme, “Translation, Interpreting, AI, and the Language Industry: Research and Professional Practice,” closely aligns with the objectives of ENEOLI and provided an ideal framework for discussing interdisciplinary approaches combining translation studies, terminology, AI, and language technologies.
The authors participated with an oral communication on the subject of “False friends and LLMs within the scope of language teaching and translation Quality Estimation: a case study of English, Spanish and French”. The research focuses on identifying false friends through a corpus-based and rule-based approach supported by Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques, applied to institutional texts from a corpus derived from documents produced by the United Nations. The study also draws on neology emergence through cross-linguistic influence and highlights the issue of neologism based on false friends.
The conference brought together leading scholars and practitioners from institutions worldwide and provided a highly relevant platform for interdisciplinary discussion on translation, interpreting, language technologies, and AI, which helped create a very interesting debate after the presentation.
