Alina Villalva is Professor of Linguistics at the Faculdade de Letras, Universidade de Lisboa, where she has taught since 1984. She is a senior researcher at the Centro de Linguística da Universidade de Lisboa and the founder and lead researcher of The Word Lab (www.talktothewordlab.com).

Her research focuses on theoretical linguistics (morphology), historical linguistics (lexicology and lexicography), and experimental linguistics related to word processing. At the intersection of theoretical and experimental morphology, she began studying blends. Most of her work is dedicated to the study of European Portuguese, often in contrast with other varieties of Portuguese and other languages.

She has published several books and numerous papers (www.cienciavitae.pt/pt/F41B-6EB3-D7C4). Professor Villalva holds a PhD in Linguistics from the Universidade de Lisboa (1995).
