Okupeklis – a blend in Latvian created from Occupation and Monument (okupācija and piemineklis) referring to Soviet monuments extolling Russia, communism and soviet army, scattered throughout Latvia. The last big one was removed from after Russia’s invasion into Ukraine.

Andrejs Veisbergs (b. 1960), Dr. Habil. Philol. is a Professor of the University of Latvia. His research publications since 1985 amount to more than 430, mainly on Translation and Interpreting, Idioms, Lexicology, Borrowing, Latvian, Language Policies, Language Contacts and Lexicography. He is the author of the biggest Latvian-English Dictionary (1997, Second edition 2005, Third edition 2016, Tilde electronic version 2021). Apart from academic activities he is also the EU accredited interpreter working for various EU institutions and agencies as well as for many one-off occasions, like President Clinton, Bush, Dalailama, Ban Ki-moon, Justine Trudeau (2018), Latvian presidents and other notables.
