FEATURED NEOLOGISM:

My favourite neologism is the Irish verb ‘clutharaigh’ which traditionally meant ‘to get cosy or snug.’ During the coronavirus pandemic the verb took on a new sense as an expression of the official advice for elderly and medically vulnerable people to shelter-in-place or cocoon. It quickly was adopted by the media as more pleasant alternative to the standard ‘cocúnaigh’ which is a calque of the English ‘to cocoon’.

Dr Gearóid Ó Cleircín is a senior member of the Gaois research group (www.gaois.ie) in Dublin City University. Gaois develops trusted digital resources for the Irish language in fields such as terminology, corpora and placenames. Recent projects include the National Corpus of Irish (www.corpas.ie). Gearóid is PI on two major terminology projects. The first of these, Téarma, involves the development of the National Terminology Database for Irish while the LEX project involves the provision of Irish-language terminology support for EU translation. He holds a PhD in Irish from Maynooth University and is member of the National Terminology Committee as well as the Centre for Translation and Textual Studies (https://ctts.ie/) in DCU. Research interests include terminology planning, lexicography and corpus linguistics.
