Solastalgia, coined by Australian philosopher Glenn Albrecht in the early 2000s. It blends “solace” and “nostalgia” to describe the sadness people feel when their home environment is damaged by climate change or ecological destruction. Unlike nostalgia, which is about longing for a lost past, solastalgia expresses the pain of loss in the present, even while still “at home.” I find it powerful because it shows how language can give voice to emotions that are increasingly shared in our age of ecological crisis.

Gülmüş Sırkıntı is an Assistant Professor in the Department of English Language and Literature at Marmara University in Istanbul, Turkey. She holds a PhD (Yıldız Technical University), an MA (Istanbul University), and a BA (Marmara University), all in Translation Studies. Between 2015 and 2019, she taught English, and since 2019, she has been teaching undergraduate courses such as Literary Translation, Translation-Oriented Text Analysis, and Information Technologies for Translation. She has authored a range of book chapters and articles in internationally edited volumes and peer-reviewed journals, addressing topics such as literary translation, translation criticism, travel writing, and translator studies. Her recent research focuses on cultural translation and climate fiction, with a particular interest in how neologisms travel across languages and how lexical innovation shapes the circulation of new cultural and ecological concepts.
