FEATURED NEOLOGISM:
”Lirens” is a neologism that emerged from the jargon of racing cyclists. It’s an adjective used to describe anything cool or visually appealing, whether it’s top-notch cycling gear, an impressive riding technique, or sportsmanship and good behavior within the peloton. Although it’s a uniquely Danish term, its exact origins are unclear. It may be derived from the noun “lir”, meaning ’something intended to impress’. I like it just because it sounds what it designates: lirens 🙂
Lars Trap-Jensen holds an academic background in general linguistics, Greenlandic and social studies from Aarhus University, Denmark, and an MPhil in linguistics from Cambridge University, UK. Since 1994, he has been a practical lexicographer at the Society for Danish Language and Literature in Copenhagen, Denmark, where he works as an editor for Den Danske Ordbog (The Danish Dictionary) and the associated dictionary website ordnet.dk, but he has also been involved as consultant and project manager in various other lexicographical projects. Lars is committed to advancing the field of lexicography, having served on the boards of the Danish Association for Lexicography, LEDA, the Nordic Association for Lexicography, and EURALEX. He is also a former Chair of Globalex. The interest in neologisms has naturally evolved from a focus on contemporary language and the need to keep the lemma stock of modern dictionaries up to date.
