FEATURED NEOLOGISM:

lögregla ‘police’ is an Icelandic 19th-century neologism whose origin I investigated. It is particular because it is a coordinative compound, which are not common at all in Icelandic. Its origin can be associated with the phrase “að halda uppi lögum og reglum” ‘to maintain law and order’. Another peculiarity of this neologism is that it first arose in the compound lögreglumaður ‘policeman’ (i.e. ‘man who keeps up law and order’) and not as an independent word. The coinage of the word can be in all likelihood be ascribed to the 19th-century linguist and spokesman of purism Konráð Gíslason. This research was published in the 2018 issue of the Icelandic journal Orð og tunga.
