FEATURED NEOLOGISM:
One neologism I find particularly intriguing is the German term “Glotzkapitalismus”, a compound noun formed from glotzen (to stare or binge-watch) and Kapitalismus (capitalism). The word critiques how digital media platforms commodify attention, turning passive viewing into a marketable resource. It emerged in German media discourse in the 2010s, especially in critiques of streaming services, social media algorithms, and surveillance capitalism. Structurally, it reflects a characteristic feature of German word formation—creative compounding to generate socially reflective vocabulary. “Glotzkapitalismus” encapsulates the shift from traditional consumer capitalism to attention-based digital economies. The term has appeared in socio-critical essays and public discourse, including the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and blog platforms. I find it compelling as it reveals how neology can articulate complex socio-technological changes with linguistic creativity and critical nuance.
