superloser
A powerful political actor whose military, economic, or geopolitical failures are compounded by corruption, institutional decay, and misguided cooperation with other failing powers, yet who continues to be perceived by parts of society as strong or successful despite mounting evidence of decline. Timothy Snyder coined this term based on the 5 C’s. In this framework, a superloser is not merely a loser. An ordinary loser fails. A superloser fails while possessing significant power, damages the institutions under their control, reinforces the failures of allied powers, and nevertheless retains a public image of strength.
