Thanatocène (or “Thanatocene”) is a neologism coined by historians Jean-Baptiste Fressoz and Christophe Bonneuil. Derived from Greek, it translates to the “era of death.” The term describes an epoch defined by industrialization, war culture, and modern technology actively leading to massive human and environmental destruction. Instead of viewing the modern era as an Anthropocène (an age where humans shape the earth), Fressoz uses the thanatocène to highlight the dark, destructive nature of modern progress.
