WG 1 webinar: Anglicisms as Lexical Innovations in Albanian
Anglicisms as Lexical Innovations in Albanian
Associate Professor Irena Kapo (Pata), University of Tirana
February, 12, 2026 // 4 PM CET
Abstract: Anglicisms in Albanian are a linguistic phenomenon that began to be studied sporadically after 2000 and have become more prominent over the past 10 years. The talk will be structured in
two parts. The first part aims to present the trajectory of the inclusion of Albanian Anglicisms in
GLAD — the Global Anglicisms Database — since 2020, including the typology of both adapted
and unadapted loans, as well as the pseudo-loans from the English language. The second part
will introduce the most recent publication on Anglicisms in Albanian: Dictionary of Anglicisms in
Albanian, and discuss the methodology used by its authors (Kristina Jorgaqi and Irena Kapo) for the inclusion of English loans in this lexicographic work published by the Academy of Science of
Albania.
