International Seminar on the Interpretation of Wine Language, University of Granada
The Faculty of Translation and Interpreting at the University of Granada hosted the V Jornadas Internacionales sobre la Interpretación del Lenguaje del Vino on 12 and 13 May 2026, bringing together specialists, students, researchers, wine professionals, and interpreters around the language, translation, and intercultural communication of wine, cheese and associated products.
The event focused on the theme “Granada: territorial identity, wine and associated products” and highlighted the importance of multilingual communication in the international wine sector.
The seminar was organised by Ana M. Díaz Ferrero and Enrique F. Quero Gervilla, with the collaboration of Slavic Culture Centre of the University of Granada, and several academic departments, cultural institutions, wineries, and the DOP Granada denomination of origin, as well as ENEOLI Cost Action.
One of the central objectives of the seminar was to provide students with hands-on training in specialised translation and interpreting within the field of wine, cheese and gastronomy. In preparation for the event, students translated wine tasting and cheese tasting materials from Spanish into English, French, German, Chinese, Portuguese, Russian, and Arabic. Throughout this process, students encountered and analysed numerous cases of lexical innovation, specialised terminology, and neology, particularly in relation to tasting descriptors, metaphorical language, and culturally specific concepts
associated with wine and cheese.
During the two-day seminar, students also interpreted presentations, wine tastings, and cheese tastings into the participating languages, offering real-time multilingual mediation between speakers, wine professionals, and attendees. This practical experience enabled students to work directly with specialised discourse linked to oenology, gastronomy, interpretation, and intercultural communication.
The event featured plenary talks and round tables dedicated to the translation and interpretation of wine and cheese discourse in international markets. Among the invited speakers were experts from academia and the wine and cheese industry, including presentations on translating local wine culture into global markets, metaphorical language in wine discourse, wine education, and international cheese traditions.
The seminar also included several guided wine and cheese tastings centred on wines from the Denomination of Origin Granada (DOP Granada), with wines from Bodegas Muñana, Bodegas Finca Cuatro Vientos, and the Xolayr project occupying a prominent place in the programme.
The V Jornadas Internacionales sobre la Interpretación del Lenguaje del Vino reaffirmed the growing importance of multilingualism, specialised translation, and interpreting in the promotion of local products within international markets. The seminar also demonstrated how experiential learning activities such as live interpreting and tasting workshops can strengthen students’ linguistic, terminological, and intercultural competences in highly specialised professional contexts.
